Own the first Sovereign of Her Majesty’s reign

The Gold Sovereign is Britain’s flagship gold coin and remains one of the most popular numismatic collector’s items internationally.

Today, following the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, you have the chance to own a truly historic Sovereign - the very first Sovereign of her reign.

The Sovereign Returns

There have been many significant Sovereigns during the Queen’s record-breaking reign that could lay claim to being the most important QEII Sovereign, but there’s only one first…

When Her Majesty was crowned in 1953, no bullion Sovereigns had been issued for 21 years due to the constraints of wartime austerity. Then, in 1957, the Sovereign returned - marking the beginning of what would become Britain’s new Elizabethan era.

Despite being the first Sovereign issued for a quarter of a century, the 1957 Sovereign has a surprisingly low mintage - less than a quarter of the 1958 Sovereign!

Today, with Queen Elizabeth II remembered as Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, the first coin of her reign carries even greater emotional and historical significance.

A Unique Design Quirk

Aside from the fact that this Sovereign is the first of its kind, it has a unique design feature that makes it stand out further. You might not have paid much attention to the ridges on the edge of your Sovereigns, but that’s exactly why this coin is so distinctive.

It features a finely milled edge with 168 grains (ridges), whereas all other Queen Elizabeth II bullion Sovereigns have just 108 grains - and collectors love anything that makes an issue unique.

Limited Number Available

Given the difficulty in sourcing these iconic coins, this Sovereign is not easy to acquire on the secondary market.

As demand for important Queen Elizabeth II memorabilia continues to grow following her passing, key coins from the very beginning of her reign are becoming increasingly sought after by collectors worldwide.
